Game 3: Consolation Championship
Pawnee 47, Riverton 42
The fifth-seeded Indians made 7 of 8 free throws over the last 1 minute 52 seconds of play as they held off No. 7 Riverton in the consolation championship.
The Riverton Hawks tied it at 38 on a Jordan Barney basket with 2:18 left in the game. But Pawnee’s J.D. Vandenberg went 4-for-4 at the line; Drew Thompson went 2-for-2 and Justin Seibt was 1-for-2.
Seibt’s free throw gave Pawnee a 45-42 lead with :19.3 remaining. After a Riverton timeout with :14.9 left, the Hawks’ Zach Yoggerst tried a 3-pointer from the left wing. But it was contested by the 6-3 Vandenberg; Pawnee got the rebound, and Vandenberg was fouled on a fastbreak attempt with :02 left.
Vandenberg made the two charities to wrap up the victory for Pawnee (9-4).
Jon Schrage led the Indians with 16 points, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Barney and Yoggerst led Riverton with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Game 2
Pawnee 44, New Berlin 42
The Pawnee Indians had held the New Berlin Pretzels to just 23 points in an 11-point victory at New Berlin on Jan. 5. But Pawnee needed last-second heroics from Schrage to avoid going into overtime in Wednesday’s rematch.
The eighth-seeded Pretzels trailed No. 5 Pawnee 42-36 with just 28.5 seconds left. But New Berlin’s Grant Pelletier hit a 3-pointer with :17 left. And after Pawnee’s Justin Seibt missed two free throws with :16.2 remaining, the Pretzels got a game-tying 3-pointer from senior Jake Bartnick with :07 to go.
After a Pawnee timeout with :06.4 left, Schrage got the in-bounds pass, crossed midcourt and got down to the free-throw circle. After dribbling and briefly looking for an open teammate, he launched a turnaround jump shot from near the free-throw line that found the mark as time ran out.
“I was thinking I had to get to the rim, make something happen and maybe get to the free-throw line because we were in the bonus,” said Schrage, a 5-11 junior. “Or if someone was open, I’d have to dish it to them real quick.
“But I finally had to put it up. It was a great feeling.”
Seibt led Pawnee (8-4) with 12 points, with nine coming in the second half. Senior Jordan Day added 10. Pelletier hit four 3-pointers and had a game-high 14 points for the 4-11 Pretzels, who will meet the Riverton-Tri-City loser for seventh place at 5 p.m. Thursday.
“We had a lot of positive things that we can take out of this game,” said New Berlin head coach Jon Barth, who employed a five-men-at-a-time substitution approach for the second straight game.
“Each of three groups (of players) did some positive things for us. It was the most intensity we’ve played with all season long and the most we played together as a team all season long. Nobody likes to lose, but we can walk out of here with our heads up.”
