News From the Nurse

There is a change in the Child Health Examination Code for Illinois Students.

New legislation recently signed into law changes the schedule for the required school health examinations from entrance into Fifth grade to entrance into Sixth Grade, which affects incoming sixth graders this fall.

The rulemaking process is complicated and does offer a provision for an emergency ruling, which has been filed, but has not been passed yet. The provision would allow incoming Sixth Graders this fall to use their Fifth Grade physical already on file with the school.  It is expected that this emergency ruling will be adopted.  Final information for schools is not yet available and will be distributed as soon as possible.

Another Change in the Child Health Examination Code requires all Kindergarten students to have a vision exam upon entering kindergarten. This new ruling has not been finalized yet and schools do not expect to receive final information until June at the earliest. We will distribute information as soon as it is available.

Dental exams are still required for grades Kindergarten, 2, and 6; they must be turned in by May 15 of the required school year-2009.
